Digital Forensics

The use of technology has become so widespread throughout the world that a person is now capable of collecting criminal evidence on computers and other such digital devices. This digital forensics, as it is called, is gathered and analyzed just like any other evidence at a crime scene. Military, law enforcement, security departments, and insurance agencies all use digital forensics.  This use of  technology has become so popular that according to Dell "many crimes today have a digital component." Dell has created a software called The Dell Digital Forensics Solution that allows the storage of information, simplifies sharing across teams of analysts, and can offer a secure remote analysis of the information. The website explains more of what this software allows it users to do.

The Digital Forensics Association has complied a list of 3,675 data breaches from 2005 to 2010 and includes over 806.2 million known records disclosed. This list of documents and records prove just how sensitive information online can be. All it takes is someone with the smallest knowledge of how to obtain information and chaos could erupt.

Along with the other two organizations MIT has held seminars on digital forensics and have discussed how it is becoming harder and harder to detect fake digital images. There are application that people can get a hold of that allow unlimited access to forgery of documents, images, and the likes. The discussion centered around trying to find mathematical ways to analyze photographs, http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2011/knight-faked-photos-event.html. With the ever increasing updates to technology it will become harder and harder to find ways to sort the actual facts from the impressionable  fakes. Digital forensics has become a requirement in today's world. Crimes have been solved, terrorists' plots have been thwarted and lives have been saved because of it. Without this technology the ability to keep people safe would decrease tremendously.

Operating Systems

The operating systems I use daily are Windows Vista and Google Android. I have always just used the operating systems without actually knowing much about them. Windows Vista was created to improve the the security of the Windows operating system. Vista also comes with "Instant Search" which increased the speed  and depth-of-content of a search. No other Windows had ever done that until Vista. Windows Vista also came with a Windows DVD Maker whose predecessor was Windows Movie Maker. This allows the user to create and personalize home videos with a DVD. Windows Internet 7 was also a new feature in Vista. It contained a new user interface, an Anit-Phishing filter, and restricted malicious software from writing anywhere beyond Temporary Internet Files without user consent. Vista also introduced Windows Aero which was new graphical user interface that was suppose to more visually pleasing. I have been using Windows Vista for about 4 years now and I never knew or even paid attention to what it really possessed.
I also use Google Android operating system. I bought the phone simply because I liked they way it looked. I never thought about what all it entailed. There are three parts to Android and they are the operating system, middleware, and key applications. Android features the application framework, Dalvik virtual machine, optimized graphics, bluetooth, EDGE, 3G, and WiFi, camera,GPS, etc. Applications on Android are built on an open development platform. Android uses the Java programming language. Android uses Dalvik virtual machince because it can run multiple VM efficiently. Android also uses the Linux Kernel for the core security, process management, and driver model.

Learning

We learn something new everyday. Whether it’s through word of mouth or more likely surfing the web, people are learning. I find that you can’t avoid the inevitable so why not embrace it. Learning has always been of interest to me because it is always expanding and will never stop.
In searching for installing memory in a computer the best website I found was the HowStuffWorks. It gives a detailed description on how to install or upgrade your Ram or you can watch a step by step video. There are several other websites that were given in order for you to have the best information needed for your query.  The HowStuffWorks Web site offers and interesting amount of information about animals. As a Pre-Vet major it is fascinating to see how different animals work. A cicada can produce a force of 36 lbs. of pressure when hit by a motorcycle moving at 85 mph. Search-and-Rescue dogs are taught to smell out people in mountains of ruble and some dogs have been able to detect cancer in their owners. This website offers facts about pets, wild, exotic, and even extinct animals that people would never have imagined.

The Betty Crocker website was extremely informational about homemade biscuits and tips to make them perfect. I enjoy making breads and cinnamon rolls from scratch but I always find that my biscuits just aren’t quite up to par. The website claims that placing the dough between two dowel rods and rolling or patting the evenly and gently between the rods will make them light, flaky and the same thickness. Betty Crocker gives advice to those of us who don’t have time to cook every meal by simply cooking ahead of time and how to retain the best quality of the food when freezing. The Food Network website allows a person to create their own recipe book by choosing favorite recipes from the site and placing them in a recipe box. This allows for easy access and less clutter of your kitchen. While exploring these sites I couldn’t help but notice the amount of advertising on new appliances that have come out. As with all things this could be good and bad. Most sites have reviews about new products but these reviews could simply be biased based on the fact that the consumer has never used anything else. The website itself could be supported by a specific brand and therefore reduces the competitiveness of the market. However, there are also benefits to marketing certain appliances. Not every appliance will work for different things being cooked, if a recipe calls for a special tool then that particular site will generally have a way for the consumer to purchase that appliance.

The World Wide Web is a wellspring of information. I was able to look up how particular things work and different recipes all within an hour. We live in an information age that no longer understands going to the library and copying out of a book. People are simply turning on their computers and accessing complete libraries and documents that would never had been available to them without the Internet.

Fun and Entertainment

Fun and Entertainment
Fun and entertainment is simply about allowing yourself to enjoy your life by easily accessing the world at your fingertips. Music, movies, and games are at your disposal with a few keystrokes or click of the mouse. There is no need to leave your house. While visiting the Geocaching site I found a geocache in my hometown, right of the main highway. I looked for The Discovery Kids live cameras but they were no longer there. The Panda Cam from the San Diego Zoo showed a breezy day but the pandas were evading the camera at the time of my viewing. I also found Wild Birds Unlimited Bird FeederCam off line but it has been watching a couple of owlets grow. I viewed several videos that showed them eating and simply enjoying being owlets. Web cams like these allow people to enjoy wildlife without having to equip themselves to go outside and do this. Some people are unable to or simply do not live in the right area to be able to view the wonders of nature.
Along with being able to enjoy nature a person can enjoy catching up with movies that have been or are soon to be released. The Internet Movie Database is one such place that informs people about who directs, plays, and is involved in the production of movies. In the soon to be released The Three Musketeers movie, Paul W.S. Anderson directed it and Logan Lerman, Ray Stevenson, Luke Evans, and Matthew Macfadyen are the main stars.

Yahoo Entertainment explores the charity work of Princess Kate, the $29.3 million that the Lion King 3-D made and Colm Meaney exploring homelessness for a movie. The World Wide Web allows people to reach across continents and obtain news that would otherwise be obscured from them.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honors the most talented bands of rock and roll. The Beatles were inducted into the Hall in 1988 and have entertained generations of people. Louis Armstrong was inducted in 1990 and has influenced all music with his playing.
As I was completing the exercises I could not quite imagine life without the easy access of information.
